Individual Assignment 1

Definitions
irony-a subtle form of humour which involves saying things that you do not mean.
metaphor-
comparisons that show how two things that are not alike in most ways are similar in one important way
stereotype-a fixed general image or set of characteristics that a lot of people believe represent a particular type of person or thing.
allusion-an indirect reference to someone or something.
personification-something abstract that has a representation in the form of a person.

symbolism-the use of symbols in order to represent something.

Book Examples

Personification
-Shaped like a long, broken arm, the road contained several houses with lacerated windows and bruised walls.
This is an example of two personifications because it is saying the walls are bruised and the road is a long, broken arm. This happens to humans, but it is represented in the window and road.

Symbolism
-The Star of David was painted on their doors.
This is an example of symbolism. The Star of David symbolizes the Jews.

-On the streets of Molching that day, each window was decorated for the Führer.
Führer is a meaning for leader in German, and it represented Hitler.

Irony
-It is ironic that Liesel is a Book Thief because she barely knows how to read.
-It is ironic that the mayor's wife saw Liesel steal the book from the fire, and the mayor has a huge library that the mayor's wife allows Liesel to use.

Excellent examples and explanations. :<)

Metaphor
-He tasted dusty and sweet.
This is a metaphor because it is a comparison of someone and what they tasted like.
-He tasted like regret in the shadows of the trees and in the glow of the anarchist's suit collection.
This is a metaphor that compares someone and what they tasted like again.

Explanations of the metaphor are not clear.

Stereotype
-In different parts of this book, it says things about how the Jews weren't good.
This is a sterotype because Jews aren't all bad. Surely there are some that are, but definetely not all.
-Talk that he was subhuman because he was black and Hitler's refusal to shake his hand were touted around the world.
This is a sterotype of black people, saying they are subhuman.

Allusion
-The accordion is an indirect reference and symbolization of comfort to Liesel.
-At the burning Leisel goes to, they are burning all these different things. It is an indirect reference to the hating of Jews because all the things were created by Jews.

Again, these are great examples and explanations. Overall a well-written assignment.

Individual Assignment 2

external conflict- a conflict that happens on the outside of somebody
internal conflict- a conflict that happens on the inside of somebody

External Conflicts of Liesel
-Rosa Hubermann yells at Liesel all the time.
-The Nazi's are killing Jews, and Liesel is helping to hide one.
-The Hubermanns couldn't find the Nazi flag during the burning.

Internal Conflicts of Liesel
-She has an addiction to stealing books.
-She doesn't know what happened to her mom.
-She has to regroup to a whole new family.

External
---Liesel's foster mother, Rosa Hubermann, is always yelling at her. Sometimes, Liesel does not do a thing wrong but is called a filthy pig. This is a conflict for Liesel that has not yet been solved. In the book, there is the Nazi killing of Jews. The Nazi's will kill any Jew, and anyone who helps a Jew. THe Hubermanns decide to help out a Jew named Max Vandenburg. This is not Liesel's decision, but she has to deal with it. It may not be such a safe thing for the Hubermanns and Liesel. There was a Nazi march and item burning in the Hubermanns neighborhood, and the Hubermanns could not find their Nazi flag. If they didn't have it out, they would have been punished. They ended up finding it behind the accordion, and they are very lucky.

Internal
---Liesel has an obsession with books. Since the Hubermanns do not have much money, she steals them. The mayor's wife has started letting Liesel use her library. This may change Liesel's ideas on stealing, so she will stop. Liesel was given to the Hubermanns, and that was the last Liesel saw of her mom. Liesel sent her letters but has not heard back. She does not have the slightest idea what is going on. Liesel went to live with the Hubermanns, when her mom could not keep her safe anymore. Liesel had to change families, and she had to meet new people. It is a difficult task for anyone, but Hans Hubermann is making it a lot easier.

External Conflicts of Rudy
-There is a new girl moving into the neighborhood, which he may not like.
-The girl is pretty good at soccer, so it is harder for Rudy to score.
-Everyone thinks he is crazy because of the Jesse Owens incident.

Internal Conflicts of Rudy
-Rudy's dad has gone to help with the war, so it is hard on him.
-Rudy wants to kiss Liesel, but she won't let him.
-He thought he was Jesse Owens once.

External
---Liesel is moving into the smae neighborhood Rudy lives in. Rudy isn't sure if he wants anybody else moving in. He does decide that he likes her a lot, after only a couple minutes. Liesel is good at soccer, and she stops Rudy's shot. Normally, Rudy scores, so this is a problem for him. He decides to take her out of the goal. Rudy had an incident that everyone calls the Jesse Owens incident. It was very weird and abnormal. People think that Rudy is crazy now.
IS HE CRAZY? JESSE OWENS SURVIVED HARSH CRITICISM AS THE FIRST BLACK TRACK ATHLETE ALLOWED TO SHOW THE WORLD HIS EXTRAORDINARY ATHLETICISM. RUDY IS TRYING TO SUCCEED IN THE FACE OF MANY OBSTACLES. IF JESSE OWENS CAN MAKE IT, THEN IN RUDY'S MIND, HE CAN, TOO. I BET THERE WERE MANY SKEPTICS WHO THOUGHT JESSE OWENS WAS CRAZY, BUT HE PERSEVERED. IN A WAY, RUDY IS TRYING TO 'BEAT THE ODDS' AS WELL.

Internal
---Rudy's dad went to help with the war. This hurts Rudy because he misses his dad and wants him back home. Rudy likes Liesel a lot. He wants to kiss Liesel, but she won't let him. He keeps trying to get her too, but she will not budge. Rudy thought he was black at one point in time. This is an embarrassing thing for him because it was so weird. It is brought up frequently too.
DOES HE REALLY THINK HE IS BLACK? IS THIS SYMBOLIC OF HIS STRUGGLE TO BE FREE? EVENTUALLY JESSE OWENS 'WON' HIS FREEDOM; IF RUDY TRIES TO LOOK/BE JESSE, PERHAPS HE WILL 'WIN' HIS FREEDOM, TOO. IN DIRE CIRCUMSTANCES, PEOPLE DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO MAKE MEANING AND PURPOSE TO LIVING; RUDY IS DOING HIS BEST TO SURVIVE THE HELLISH WORLD HE IS LIVING IN.

Individual Assignment 3

The youth of Germany, between the ages of 10-18, and was mandatory for them to join(???) THIS IS NOT COMPLETE. The main purpose of the youth group was to spread Hitler's ideas around the nation, and create a new generation that would be loyal. It was to create a unified Germany for the new times. This shows Hitler's want for a "perfect" world. Hitler wanted the young people to become one. He wanted them to be loyal to the German government, and he wanted his ideas spread through the nation by these children. When the children became older, he expected them to share his ways, that he believed to be the best and only ways.
WHY WAS IT SO IMPORTANT THAT HE USE SUCH YOUNG CHILDREN?

Individual Assignment 4

bandwagon-a party, cause, movement, that by its mass appeal or strength readily attracts many followers
scapegoat-a person or group made to bear the blame for others or to suffer in their place

Bandwagon relates to The Book Thief because almost all the Germans are jumping on the Nazi party bandwagon. The Nazi's are bringing up a huge association (????). The people of Germany are a part of it, even the Hubermanns, who don't want to be part of it.
IF PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO 'JUMP ON THE BANDWAGON', WHY DO THEY?
The scapegoat's are the Jews. Hitler is killing them for know/NO reason, and he is blaming them for bad things. The Jews have not done a thing to deserve this
. The Jews are suffering for the Nazi's because of Hitler.
YOU'RE RIGHT. THE JEWS ARE THE SCAPEGOATS, BEING BLAMED FOR ALL THE EVIL IN THE WORLD. IRONICALLY, HITLER BRINGS ABOUT MORE EVIL THAN ANY OTHER DICTATOR.
